Background

Alan Shihadeh, Sc.D., is dean of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture and professor of Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut. He earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998.

Dr. Shihadeh studies the chemistry, physics and effects of airborne particle pollutants, with emphases on tobacco-related aerosols. Researchers world-wide use instruments and methods he and his team developed to study tobacco smoke.

Dr. Shihadeh advises the World Health Organization, is a project director at the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products and directs the Aerosol Research Laboratory at the American University of Beirut.
